Wesley Perry

Since picking up the alto saxophone at the age of 10, Wes Perry has developed an ever-growing passion for music. Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Wes began his musical career in high school, when he began to perform in small groups with his classmates, and started playing in pit orchestras. He was a member of the Columbus Youth Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Todd Stoll. During his time in the group, the band toured Lima, Peru, with saxophonist Wess “Warmdaddy” Anderson.

Wes earned his bachelor's degree in Jazz Studies from The Ohio State University in 2015. He studied saxophone with Shawn “Thunder” Wallace, and was a five-year member of the OSU Jazz Ensemble. During his time at OSU, Wes established a presence as an in-demand saxophonist, playing and recording with a variety of groups, from big bands, to hip-hop groups, to rock bands. Wes has also led many of his own groups, including one that released an album (Breaking Ground, 2014) featuring some of Wes' compositions and arrangements. Wes was also selected to be a member of the JECO Intercollegiate Jazz Ensemble two years in a row, and was a member of the 2014 Disneyland All-American College Band.

Shortly after his graduation from Ohio State, Wes moved to California to pursue a master's degree in Jazz Studies at California State University, Long Beach. There, he studied saxophone with Sal Lozano, and performed in many ensembles, including the award-winning Concert Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Jeff Jarvis. During his time in that group, Wes was named a two-time Outstanding Soloist at the Elmhurst College Jazz Festival (2016 and 2017).

Wes maintains an active schedule as a freelance musician and educator, including playing regularly with the San Diego based big band, Gaslamp Quarter Jazz Orchestra, reggae group Arise Roots, and has a private teaching studio.

Though primarily a saxophonist, Wes also has skills as a multi-instrumentalist. He has performed on clarinet, flute, oboe, English horn and keyboards.

Wes has performed with Wayne Bergeron, John Clayton, Sal Lozano, The Cab Calloway Orchestra, Delfeayo Marsalis, Tribal Seeds, The Original Wailers, Western Standard Time Ska Orchestra and many others
